Headway News, December 2021
- 8 December 2021
Find out all the latest happenings and information about Headway - Brain Injury Auckland. Despite lockdowns and Headway House being closed, there is still lots of action happening and we are doing our best to keep you connected.
Like many of you, I have mostly stayed home since we went into lockdown in August. Like many of you I have missed seeing family and friends. However, I have made the most of ZOOM, Facetime and WhatsApp to stay in touch, and I have tried to keep up with exercise. This weekend, on one of my walks, I noticed the Pohutukawa trees in my neighbourhood They are a spirit-lifting reminder of the celebrations to come – Christmas, and summer holidays.
It's good to take the time to celebrate the little things that bring us joy as well as the bigger occasions. I am very much looking forward to seeing you all in the New Year and hope many of you will be able to come along to the delayed AGM in February.
Headway House is much easier to spot now. We have a wonderful new electronic sign. Once we open up again, you will be able to see what activities are on at Headway each day.
Please do take care of yourselves, your families and friend over the Christmas and Summer period and have an enjoyable, safe and relaxing summer.
Have a very happy Christmas and here’s wishing you all a superb 2022.
Ruth
President, Headway (Brain Injury Association Auckland Inc)
How to Be Concussed - Podcast Series
During lockdown Timothy Giles created this series of podcasts. He shares his deep insights and personal experiences of living with concussion. Everyone’s journey through concussion is unique, but those living with concussion have much in common. Timothy’s conversations help explain the day-to-day frustrations and difficulties faced by those who have suffered a concussion and provide practical suggestions to make life easier for them, their whānau, friends and carers.
Headway Activities Online
Over the last few months you may not have been able to attend live events at Headway House, but we have stayed in contact with those who have chosen to join in on the Online Tai Chi, TBI group and Singing sessions weekly.
It’s never the same as meeting in person but at least we managed a few laughs and fun times. Everyone is looking forward to face to face meetings in 2022.
All Headway Activities will remain online until 17th December.
New Road Sign
For anyone driving past Headway House, 207 Manukau Road, over that last year you will have noticed the fading road sign.
With the generous support of sponsorship from Drake Medox, funding support from Pub Charities and the Albert-Eden Local Board and our fundraising efforts at the Mitre 10 Sausage sizzle, we are now unveiling the new Headway House Electronic road sign.
The skin is still being printed to add the artwork, which we hope will arrive next week. But the full colour, LED, Electronic sign board is now up and running!
Next time you drive past, or come to an event at the House, look out for notices being displayed. It is very exciting!
Cheers for the Chairs
A special delivery of 40 new chairs arrived at the House last week.
Thanks to the generosity of funding from the Blue Sky Trust.
These chairs are fully stackable and will be a great asset for us during events as they can be used inside and out.
Growing soon - The Headway Community Garden
In 2022 look out for some changes coming to the Headway House garden!
The Headway community is being supported by the generosity of the Mazda foundation to help us build our own community garden around Headway House.
So look out for your opportunity to help us grow and provide vegetables in 2022 and beyond.
Sadly not this year…
Due to the ongoing Covid situation the annual Headway Christmas Party and Summer Picnic events are not going the held this year.
But as you may be able to see, we are beginning to prepare for some exciting activities and events to replace these in the new year.
Covid Vaccine Pass
Headway House will be a vaccine pass entry site. In order to attend activities and events at Headway House you will be required to show your Vaccine pass for entry.
A register of pass holders will be created so you will not need to show it every time you arrive.
If you are not vaccinated, our services will still be available online or by arrangement with the liaison officers.
Have you downloaded your Vaccine Pass yet?
Happy Holidays
As Auckland enters into the New Covid Protection Framework at Red. There are going to be a number of new ways to engage.
May your summer holidays be filled with fun and adventures.
By the time we meet again face to face with activities at Headway House, there will be many stories to share.
There are some great activities to look forward to and we look forward to welcoming you back to the House in 2022 from Tuesday 1st February.
Hats Off for Headway - can you help us?
As you will be aware, all activities and services provided by Headway are free for all who use them.
What you may not know is that we do not receive any ACC or Government funding to run our services.
All our services are provided by the assistance of grants and funding applications, fundraising events and the generosity of donors, like you.
Funding is getting increasingly difficult, our events were all cancelled this year due to lockdowns and our donors are few and far between. So we need your help to help us to keep all our activities running.
Will you help us by donating the cost of one of your 'missed' haircuts?
Thank You Emma!
Emma arrived at Headway House three years ago and has been the dedicated, enthusiastic, engaged, entertaining and talented director of Headway Harmonies.
Congratulations Emma on your new job! You will be missed and will be a very hard act to follow. But the singers will look forward to the occasional cameo appearances in the future.
Thank you! You are a 'One in a Million!'
